The BTCC’s governing body, TOCA, have announced that the technical regulations will be changing for 2027 and beyond as the next five-year regulation cycle is upon the teams.

The current regulations have been in place since 2011, as it was slowly integrated over the next three years before becoming the sole regulation for the BTCC. The NGTC regulations having spanned 15 seasons at this point, look to be evolving as TOCA aim to make some changes to it while keeping the current specifications in place. Keeping the current regulations means that the current teams and their assets are protected for years to come but with the changes being made, it could open some doors for the current manufactures and teams as well as some new entries looking to join the BTCC.

Currently, the NGTC regulations specify that the cars eligible to be used are models that are currently being sold in the UK. This means that some manufacturers would either be unable to enter due to not selling cars in the UK within the NGTC regulations or that manufacturers would be unable to use a more preferred model that is sold across the globe. TOCA, have decided to adjust this rule allowing any manufacturer that sells cars in the UK to enter a model that is not available in the UK as long as it meets the NGTC specifications.

Another change to the regulation which allows the teams and manufacturers greater flexibility is to the engine regulations for the NGTC cars. TOCA have removed the link between the engine requirements for each car meaning any BTCC-homologated can be used and is no longer manufacturer specific. Registered engine builders for the BTCC will be obliged to supply any team if they are requested to unless they already supply half the cars entered. This excludes the TOCA Engine which is available to all teams. The opening up of engine availability means that costs can be spread out more and teams can find the optimum base engine for their car.

There is a few more amendments to the technical regulations that are going to be announced over the coming weeks as the BTCC gears up for the changes in 2027.

BTCC Chief Executive, Alan Gow, stated: “We’re pleased to announce the BTCC’s technical regulations for the next five-year cycle, to commence in 2027, and I thank all our teams for their invaluable input over the last two years to bring them to fruition.

“Every team wanted the BTCC to continue with the evolution of our great technical regulations, that was unquestioned. Therefore, our current stakeholders now have the assurance that their major components and capital investment will remain valid through 2031.

“This evolution of the regulations also provides teams with more options, through opening the door to a host of new models and engines that can now be eligible for the BTCC.

“We value these successful regulations, which will have largely been in place for almost 20 years at the conclusion of this next cycle. The BTCC technical regulations, like the BTCC itself, is a true British success story.”
